Job Description:

Healthcare Executive Placements, Inc. (HCEPInc) is seeking a Locum Cardiothoracic Surgeon for a contract assignment based in Topeka, Kansas.

Schedule: Combination of clinic, OR, rounding, and call coverage

Assignment Duration: 6 Months

Start Date: October 1, 2026

Location: Topeka, KS

Coverage Need: Part-Time Locum Coverage

Compensation:
Hourly Rate: $130-$140 per hour
Estimated Provider Pay Per 24-Hour Call: $3,120-$3,360

Summary:

HCEPInc is seeking an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeon to support an established Cardiovascular Service Line in Topeka, Kansas. This opportunity is available due to the retirement of a current surgeon and offers the ability to join a collaborative, high-performing cardiac surgery program with strong APP, CVICU, OR, and perfusion support.

The ideal candidate will be a board-certified or board-eligible Cardiothoracic Surgeon with current experience performing adult cardiac surgery, valve procedures, and complex cardiovascular interventions. Providers with TAVR, TCAR, vascular, and thoracic surgery experience are highly desired.

Essential Functions:

Provide comprehensive Cardiothoracic Surgery coverage across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Perform consultations, evaluations, surgical procedures, and postoperative management.
Participate in clinic, operating room, rounding, and call responsibilities.
Collaborate with APPs, CVICU staff, perfusionists, nursing teams, and ancillary departments to deliver high-quality patient care.
Manage adult cardiac surgery patients throughout the continuum of care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with facility standards and policies.
Document patient encounters and procedural activities accurately and timely.

Coverage Requirements:

Minimum commitment of six (6) months.
Approximately two weeks of weekday call coverage per month.
One weekend of call coverage per month.
Approximately twelve (12) call shifts per month.
Call schedule: 7:00 AM - 7:00 AM (24-hour call).

Patient Volume

Clinic:

Approximately 6-7 consults per day

Hospital:

Approximately 4-6 patients per day

Required Case Experience:

Candidates must be comfortable independently performing:

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)
Mitral Valve Replacement/Repair (MVR)
Thoracic Procedures
Vascular Procedures
Carotid Procedures
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)
Endovascular AAA Repairs

Qualifications:

Board Certified or Board Eligible Cardiothoracic Surgeon required.
Adult Cardiac Surgery experience required.
Current BLS certification required.
Current ACLS certification required.
Active DEA registration required.
Strong experience performing open cardiac and valve procedures required.
TAVR, TCAR, vascular, and thoracic surgery experience highly preferred.
Excellent communication and team collaboration skills required.

Licensure:

Active Kansas medical license preferred.
Candidates eligible to obtain Kansas licensure may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Kansas license must be active prior to assignment start.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal provider is a currently practicing adult cardiac surgeon who regularly performs CABG, valve, and open-heart procedures. Experience with TAVR, TCAR, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and endovascular interventions is highly desired. The client is seeking a collaborative, team-oriented surgeon who is interested in supporting and growing a well-established Cardiothoracic Surgery program.
